Family Institute Learning Sessions are categorized into four strands:

Designed to support the personal and professional development goals of participants.  These sessions focus on child development, effective parenting practices, parent leadership, and advocacy.

Sample Sessions Will Include:

  • Navigating the Prince George’s County Public Schools system
  • Adolescent Growth and Development
  • Child Development
  • Financial Literacy
  • Language Acquisition Classes
  • Parent/Family Teacher Conferences
  • Communicating with Schools, Communicating with Families, Communicating with Children

Designed to foster an in-depth understanding of a child’s grade level curriculum, assessments, academic supports, policies and procedures.

Sample Sessions Will Include:

  • Arts Integration
  • Assessments
  • College and Career Readiness
  • Early Childhood Education
  • Learning in a Digital Age Arts Exploration
  • Literacy Development
  • Mathematics Fluency
  • Science Technology Engineering Mathematics (STEM)
  • Special Education Services

Designed to offer participants the opportunity to develop healthy habits that promote success.  These sessions emphasize the importance of physical, social and emotional well-being.

  • Fitness Nutrition
  • Restorative Justice
  • Social Media Safety
  • Stress Management

Designed for Prince George’s County Public Schools (PGCPS) staff.  Sessions aim to equip school and office staff with best practices in family and community engagement.

  • Creating A Family Engagement Plan
  • Creating A Welcoming Environment
  • Cultural Proficiency
  • Effective Communication
  • Engaging All Families

In addition to learning sessions, other components of the Family Institute include:


  • Community Book Read: Members of the PGCPS community engaging through the reading of a common themed book

  • Annual Family Institute Conference / Summit

  • Family Institute Strategy of the Month

  • Systemic Events: PARCC Nights, Back to School Fair, PTA/PTO Meetings, Individual Back to School Nights

Through sustained and accessible opportunities provided through the Family Institute, family and community engagement will increase and participants’ capacity to support the PGCPS goal of Outstanding Academic Achievement for all will be realized.
